You watched the news tonight. Or you meant to watch the news. Now it’s late and you’re lying in the dark and your brain is still going.

This is not a coincidence. The platforms that deliver your news, and the podcasts that have built entire economies around reacting to it, are designed to keep you in exactly the state you’re in right now. Algorithms don’t promote content because it’s true, or important, or well-reported. They prioritize content that triggers emotional reactions like fear, anger, or outrage, because those emotions keep people engaged. An engaged user is a user who keeps scrolling, who clicks the next video, who comes back tomorrow. The fact that “engaged” means “physiologically activated” — cortisol up, amygdala lit, sympathetic nervous system running — is not their problem. But at midnight, it’s yours.

The antidote to outrage isn’t calm. It’s boredom. And boredom, it turns out, is very hard to manufacture.

Doomscrolling Insomnia Is Not a Willpower Problem

Reading about crises and conflicts activates your stress response right when your body should be winding down. Studies confirm that in-bed social media use is associated with insomnia, creating a cycle where poor sleep makes you more vulnerable to anxiety, which leads to more scrolling. Research published in Sleep journal found that higher cortisol levels at pre-sleep predict shorter sleep, poorer sleep quality, and longer time to fall asleep that night, providing evidence that daily stress directly disrupts the ability to fall asleep.

The instinct, when you can’t sleep after the news, is to reach for something calming. A meditation app. A sleep story. Breathing exercises. These are not wrong suggestions. But they underestimate what the outrage machine has done to your nervous system. Mindfulness asks an activated brain to observe its own activation non-judgmentally. At 11:30 p.m., after two hours of algorithmically-curated threat content, that’s a significant ask. Sleep stories give your brain a narrative to follow. And often it follows the narrative just well enough to keep you awake.

The outrage cycle keeps you awake through a specific mechanism. Your brain, which in people with insomnia tends to stay focused on worries, problems, and perceived threats rather than drifting toward the dream-like, less ordered thoughts that characterise good sleepers before they nod off, has spent hours being trained to find the next threatening thing. When you put your phone down, it doesn’t stop. It generates its own content, replaying what you read, anticipating what comes next, finding the worry underneath the worry.

The standard sleep interventions fail news anxiety insomnia because they don’t interrupt this loop. They sit alongside it, competing for attention. Counting sheep is boring, which means almost any anxious thought proves more compelling. Sleep stories engage the narrative centres, which keeps a light cognitive load running. Cognitive shuffling attempts to mimic the thinking patterns of good sleepers, with dream-like, hallucinatory, less ordered thoughts before drifting off. In its original form, the technique asks you to generate this content yourself: pick a random word, free-associate through its letters. The problem is that at midnight, after hours of outrage content, the insomniac’s brain is poorly positioned to generate anything neutral on demand. It keeps sliding back to the feed.

Why Most Calming Podcasts for Anxiety Don’t Fix This

Your phone spent all day engineering outrage. Your sleep podcast needs to be more boring than your phone was engaging. That’s a higher bar than most sleep content clears.

The latest Edison Infinite Dial report found that 45% of Americans now listen to or watch podcasts weekly, an all-time high, with news and current affairs a major part of that growth. A third of U.S. adults now get news from podcasts at least sometimes, up sharply from 22% in 2020. What this means in practice: the podcast medium, at scale, has become a primary delivery system for the same outrage-optimised content that news feeds and social platforms have always delivered. The format is different. The mechanism is identical. Algorithms favour the most emotionally engaging content. Hosts learn, consciously or not, that stronger takes generate stronger reactions. The listener who comes to podcasts looking for respite from the news cycle often ends up consuming a more personalised, more intimate version of it.

Sleep podcasts are not immune to this dynamic. Many are structured around narrative: something to follow, something to resolve, something to feel. That’s engagement. And engagement is the enemy of sleep.

The instinct when you’re overstimulated is to seek something soothing. Gentle music. Ocean sounds. A soft voice telling you it’s okay. These things are not useless. But for a brain trained by an evening’s worth of news content to stay alert for threats, they don’t provide sufficient competition for the cognitive loop the news left running.

What works is substitution, not soothing. Give the brain a neutral, structured, low-reward replacement and it will, eventually, use that instead of the thing that’s keeping it awake.
